Ogletree, Madison

Field: United States; Advisor: McCurry; Year: 2019

Born and raised in small-town Alabama, Madison Ogletree completed her undergraduate education in her home state at Auburn University. There, she received a B.A. in History and a B.A. in English-Literature (2019). During her time at Auburn, Madison also worked as a freelance photojournalist for the school’s student newspaper and AL.com, covering local and national news as well as sporting events.

In her research, Madison examines race and identification in the nineteenth-century American South with a specific focus on persons of mixed ancestry. Her work foregrounds the intersections of Black, white, and Native America in the southern Black Belt region through a legal perspective. Madison intends to incorporate social history into her methodology to ascertain a greater sense of these cross-cultural interactions outside the courts.
