Urte is a PhD student in modern European history, with a focus on nationalism and socialism in early 20th-century Eastern Europe. She is interested in how concepts and identities of class and nation created new forms of social mobilization in the ‘borderlands’ of the former Russian Empire amid war and revolution.

Urte holds a master's in history from Birkbeck, University of London, and an undergraduate degree in International Relations from the University of Edinburgh. Prior to arriving at Columbia, Urte worked in policy analysis and research in the United Kingdom, for organisations including The Hepatitis C Trust, Healthwatch England, and the International Public Policy Observatory at UCL.
