Jake Barrett is a PhD student in the Latin American history cluster. His work focuses on nineteenth-century Brazil, primarily the history of abolition and slavery, policing, and transnational approaches to Brazilian intellectual history. He is also interested in music history, especially the history of martial music and police bands and the use of music in Brazilian social movements.
Jake completed his undergraduate coursework at the University of California, Davis, where he received a BA in History with a minor in African American Studies. Prior to coming to Columbia, Jake worked as a pianist and music educator in the San Francisco Bay Area.
