Pengyue Wang is a Ph.D. student in Early Modern European History at Columbia. He studies the history of Imperial Russia in the early modern Southern Urals. In particular, Pengyue focuses on the rebellions of the Bashkirs and their influence on the evolution of Russian frontier administration from Ulozhenie of 1649 to the administrative reforms of Catherine the Great in 1775. More broadly, he is interested in the history of ethnography, taxation, land ownership, and military expansion in Russian Asia.

Before coming to Columbia, Pengyue received his B.A. in History and Slavic Languages and Literatures from Northwestern University. His undergraduate thesis discusses major Bashkir rebellions from 1662 to 1740 within the context of Russian suzerainty in Bashkiria.

Pengyue is a fan of the Chicago Bulls and Everton Football Club.
