Luke Binder is a student in the Ph.D. program at Columbia University with a concentration in early American history. Before beginning his doctoral work, Luke completed undergraduate studies at the George Washington University and a Master's degree in international and world history at Columbia University and at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His work focuses upon slavery, capitalism, and economic development in the colonial and early federal Upper South. His Master's thesis discussed the transition from indentured servitude to slavery in early Maryland. He is also presently preparing work on the material culture of shipboard medicine in the Royal Navy during the War of the Spanish Succession. When not engaged in historical coursework or research, Luke can usually be found at the nearest repertory cinema.
