Interests and Research

Roger Bagnall, Professor Emeritus of History, specializes in the social, economic, administrative, and cultural history of the Greek and Roman World, with particular interest in the history and documents of the Hellenistic, Roman, and Late Antique East, especially Egypt. His publications include Egypt in Late Antiquity (Princeton), 1993; The Demography of Roman Egypt (Cambridge), 1994 (with B. W. Frier); Reading Papyri, Writing Ancient History (Routledge), 1995; The Oxford Handbook of Papyrology(Oxford), 2009; Everyday Writing in the Graeco-Roman East (California), 2011; and An Oasis City(NYU), 2015.
