Field: East Asia; Advisor: Gregory Pflugfelder; Year: 2019

Mairead Hynes is a first-year PhD student studying the history of modern Japan with Dr. Gregory Pflugfelder; she is also pursuing a graduate certificate with the Institute for Research on Women, Gender, & Sexuality. She is interested in the history of women’s groups, networks and social activism in the 1970s and 1980s, and especially in the ways that women framed their activities in relation to city, prefectural, and national policies on “women’s issues.” She is also interested in how women in the 1970s and 1980s engaged with memories of the previous generation’s experience of war participation. Before entering the Ph.D. program at Columbia University, Mairead graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2013 with a BA in History, and earned her MA in Contemporary Asian Studies at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan in 2018.
