Kellen Heniford is a PhD candidate studying 19th century U.S. history, with a particular focus on race, slavery, and emancipation. Her current research interests revolve around gradual abolition and the formation of sectional identity along the borders of slavery and freedom. Stephanie McCurry is her advisor. She is a Richard Hofstadter Fellow in the Department of History.
She completed the first year of the PhD program at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was the 2014-5 School of Arts and Sciences William E. Lingelbach Fellow, before moving to Columbia to continue working with Professor McCurry. She graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 2014 with a degree in History and African American Studies.
