Thomas Meaney is a PhD candidate in the history department. He works on US and European intellectual and political history, with a focus on US foreign relations in the 20th century. His dissertation, “The American Hour,” is a history of the shifting attitudes of US policy elites toward decolonization. It spans from the postwar debates about the International Trusteeship System to the emergence of new strands of global thought in the wake of the Vietnam War.

Thomas is co-editor of The Utopian and a Project Syndicate Fellow. He teaches Literature Humanities in the Columbia Core. His writing has appeared in The New York Review of Books, The London Review of Books, and The Times Literary Supplement .
