Shah, Rohan

Field: International & Global; Advisor: Stephanson & Phillips-Fein; Year: 2017

Rohan Shah is a doctoral candidate in history at Columbia University. His research examines 20th century US and international history, with a focus on postwar political-economy. He is writing a dissertation on the protracted social, political, and economic conflicts surrounding the collapse of the Bretton Woods system in the US. Exploring what contemporaries called "interdependence" in the 1970s and 1980s, the project examines labor, business, and government's fragmented response to growing economic entanglement. His research grows out of broader interests in modern intellectual history, the global history of capitalism, and US social and political history. He also writes about the intellectual and cultural history of neoconservatism.

Rohan co-convened Columbia's weekly International History Workshop (2018-2020) and served as Program Coordinator for the AHA sponsored History in Action project (2017-2018). He is currently teaching Columbia's Contemporary Civilizations course as a Core Preceptor.

Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, Rohan received his BA in History and Politics from UC Santa Cruz, before completing a dual MA/MSc in International and World History between Columbia University and the London School of Economics. There he wrote his masters thesis on internationalism and early Indian foreign policy.
